I’ve not seen the PAVEMENT PARADISE exhibit in Los Angeles, but I’d like to! If any of you fine readers attend this show, please let the rest of us know what it was like by posting in the comments. With a tag line like the following, I’m sure it is interesting!

An exhibit about the liminal, substanceless, and static space of automotive transience.

Humorous Parking Poem

Monday, February 5th, 2007

There is always room for more humor in the parking world, and thus I offer this poem to start your week with a smile. I received this poem on a parking email list, from Michelle Guajardo at Central New Mexico Community College, but she attributed it to “RGile” - Googling did not offer any further insights into the original author. Enjoy!

Please don’t ticket me I’m parking
Just give me a moment please
I would have gotten a permit
Except that I can’t read
Don’t try to stop me now
Cause I’ll just have a fit
I dont’ want to be late
for my class in English Lit

Excuse where I’m parking
I know it’s a loading zone
And I’m not really loaded…
I almost never drink alone
But if I park here often
Perhaps I’ll find a friend
Then we can meet here everyday
Getting loaded once again

Hey watch out there I’m parking
To bad I’ve blocked you in
You really must control yourself
Impatience is a sin–
Of course I’m in a hurry
I’ll be back late tonight
Perhaps the car behind you wil lleave
Then it will be alright
I can’t stay here to discuss it
I’ve really got to run
I certainly can’t be late for Ethics 101

Be careful here I’m parking
Half in handicap. Half on the curb
I see it as a compromise
At that I’m just superb.
I like to park in exciting ways
It adds some zest to my days
I’m hoping to form a parking maze
Ecletic parking will become a craze
This habit will take root!
Just a minute. What do you mean?
I’m wearing sandels not a boot..

Rotting Car

Rotting parking meter
I’m not sure why parking inspires so many artists - perhaps because it is all around us, but rarely really noticed by any of us (except, of course, when we are furiously circuling the block looking for that non-existent vacant space because the local parking manger hasn’t yet read The High Cost of Free Parking!).

The Rotting Car project proposes an creative twist on parking enforcement - when the paid time expires on an occupied parking space, the meter releases an distinct smell of rotting organic matter. Effective? Maybe. Creative? Absolutely! See more of this artists project here.
